The final and deciding race day for the North Coast Series between Hillarys Yacht Club and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club was cancelled due to the strong winds offshore on Sunday.
Instead sailors retired to the club house at Ocean Reef for celebratory drinks, lunch and a few tales of how HYC was going to come from behind to claim victory. It wasn’t to be with a comprehensive win to ORSSC over the eight races during the summer season in which they won each of the four race days and reclaimed the trophy held by HYC for the past four years.
The top yacht in each division was from ORSSC, Ian Campbell’s Missing Linck in division one and Alan Peacham’s Feelin Free in division two, with Frank Centa’s Etchell Leda (third in division one) and Geoff James’ Panache (second in division two) also placegetters. The best of the HYC yachts were Deckchairs Overboard (Neil Harrison) second in division one and Show Me (Bruce Ellery) third in division two.
Twenty four yachts competed in the series over the season, the majority from HYC however the current success of the ORSSC team and the promise of an expanded marina for Ocean Reef in the future augurs well for the competition in the years to come.
