The blustery conditions on Sunday didn’t deter eighteen yachts starting in race 3 of the winter series held off Hillarys Yacht Club.
The results are determined by the order in which yachts cross the finish line due to the handicap start. It is spectacular to see spinnakers flying and yachts jostling as they converge on the finish line.
In division one, experienced skipper, Des Riley on Hard Evidence stole an early march on the rest of the fleet to win comfortably from Seachange and Dart Vader with Mulberry was just 4 seconds behind Dart Vader. Starting as the back-marker Roric Smith on his Pogo 12.5 speedster Surfer Rosa chased the fleet to record the fastest time of the day in finishing 5th.
In division two, the back marker, Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) handled the conditions best with skilful spinnaker work on the downwind legs to record first and fastest, albeit only by 6 seconds from Xtreme. Sailed by four dinghy sailors, the HYC Youth Squad, Xtreme was impressive in the challenging conditions. Third over the line was the visiting yacht Not Negotiable sailed by Greg Hill. Chris Kelly and his team of aspiring sailors on Pandora were first and fastest in division three.
