Pot of Gold 2018 website news

With a backdrop of colourful spinnakers flown by the elite offshore yachts

competing in the annual Pot of Gold event hosted by Hillarys Yacht Club, the local sailors made their own Dash for Cash. The two separate events held last Saturday brought the yachts together off Sorrento and Scarborough providing a spectacle for the onshore viewers.

In the Dash for Cash a moderate north-easterly breeze set the local yachts on their way however it soon shifted to the north-west before fading, challenging crews to select and trim the right sails as boat speed dropped.

In division one there was no trouble for the catamaran Sally Malay (Ian Walker) who revelled in the conditions and powered away to a 10 minute win over Neil Harrison’s Deckchairs Overboard and third placed Lamotrek (John Akers).

All the checks and balances paid off for Greg Hill sailing Not Negotiable for a win in division two with Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) second and third placed Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) fastest on the day.

In division three, Catabatic (Rob Bills) was first and fastest with Brian and Rita Buzzard sailing Sana 11 into second place.

Whilst the Fremantle Sailing Club yachts dominated the Pot of Gold, Mark Pitt’s Mulberry from Hillarys was third in division two and Low Flying Duck (Ryan Binedell) was second in the double handed division (YAH) and first on IRC. From Fremantle first place went to Twitch (Barrett Walsh) on YAH and Weapon of Choice (Mark Nagle) on IRC in division one with Bill Henson’s Circa first on both YAH and IRC in division two.

All crews enjoyed the overnight hospitality of Hillarys Yacht Club before setting sail in the Shepherdess Cup return race to Fremantle on Sunday morning.
