Blue Chip, Volant and Catabatic run to the finish line

Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club took another step towards retaining the North Coast Trophy with an emphatic win on day three of five days of racing despite the valiant efforts of Hillarys yachts Hard Evidence and Volant.

Sailed in Sunday’s strong easterly which faded late in the morning the fluky and shifting breeze favoured those who were ahead and picked the shifts.

Hard Evidence had a good day with a win and a third placing

In race one, division one, the stronger breeze suited Ian Walker’s catamaran Sally Malay picking up the win for Hillarys Yacht Club and Hard Evidence (Des and Gail Riley, Marshall Fox) was third. In division two Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) was first and Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta) second, reducing the lead of Ocean Reef over Hillarys to just thirteen points.

In race two, the Etchells of Ocean Reef fought back with second going to the fastest in both races, Whim A Way (Mick Caulfield) and equal third to Leda (Frank Centa) and Stump Jumper (Shane Irwin). Fortunately Hard Evidence won for Hillarys picking up valuable points.

Whim A Way in action

Panache (Geoff and Rita James) sailing for Ocean Reef was third in the first race and won the second race (also fastest) however Volant was second and Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) third for Hillarys.

The strong showing of Ocean Reef in race two extended their lead to twenty two points and was heartily celebrated at post-race celebrations, however no crews are throwing their skippers in the drink yet, there are still two days of racing to go.
