Discover Sailing Day Lures Many

Hillarys Yacht Club opened up their doors to the public on Sunday October 17 and were inundated with visitors to try their hand at sailing on the annual Discover Sailing Day. Despite the grey cloud cover and the threat of rain three hundred “discoverers” came to try sailing on a keelboat or a dinghy whilst others tried the paddleboards.
Sixteen keelboats made an average of four trips each to cater for two hundred and eighty five adults and children, eighty five went for a sail in a dinghy and seventy three tried out paddling kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.
Under the watchful eye of the skipper, some had the opportunity to take the helm and steer the boat whilst others enjoyed being up the front with the wind and spray in their face. Families quickly realised the potential of the children learning to sail beginning with the Tackers’ program in dinghies whilst parents could crew on keelboats, learning the ropes and enjoying the social aspects of the Club. The Club offers learn to sail programs for adults and courses for children in the school holidays.
Hillarys Yacht Club has an “open door” policy in October where visitors can come and try activities of the angling, dinghy, dive, power, paddling and keelboat sections as well as the hospitality facilities. Visit www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au or call 9246 2833 for more information.
