Fremantle and Return Ocean Races
Whispering Jack is quickly proving to be the yacht that others will be chasing this season after a win and a second placing in the annual Hillarys to Fremantle and return ocean races over the weekend.
Beating into a strong southerly going south on Saturday and then some hair-raising downwind kite flying in a breeze that fetched more than twenty knots on the return journey on Sunday the yachts and crews suffered some damage and injury.
In division one Lithium (Wayne Pitcher) set the pace being fastest both ways albeit only five seconds ahead of Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) on the return to Hillarys. To Fremantle it was Whispering Jack first with Surfer Rosa (Roric Smith) and Lithium taking the minor places on handicap. On the return leg it was Perle first, Whispering Jack second and Adam’s Rib (Rob Giraudo and Bob Mason) third. Lithium and Perle shared the IRC honours, each with a win.
Equally impressive with a first and a second placing and fastest both ways in division two, Covert Operation (Graham Atkinson and Bart Brouwer) showed why she is the current Club Champion. Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk), also with a first and second placing performed extremely well given they are without the regular crew. Show Me (Tim Tucker) was third in both races.
In division three, Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) was fastest both ways and first going to Fremantle. Second fastest in both races was Mimosa (Tony Brooke) for a second placing with Comfortably Numb (Steve O’Keeffe) third. On the return leg it was Stelfred (Laraine Brindle) first with Sensei (Brett and Lynda Bailey) second and Tosca (Stuart Marks and Leigh Collins) third.
The shorter consistency race will be held next Sunday however the challenging Marmion Reef Race awaits yachts and crews the following week.
