Marmion Reef Race
Seachange revelled in the strong wind which almost blasted yachts off the course when the westerly hit 30 knots during the latter stages of the Marmion Reef Ocean Race on Sunday.
Seachange (Hugh Burton, David Boyd, Cass Catalanelli, John Gregory) recovered after losing control of the spinnaker when attempting to take it down to go on and win comfortably in division one. Lamotrek (John Akers) used their code zero sail effectively to stay in touch with the leaders to finish in second place with Dart Vader (Scott Eiszle and Neil Ireland) third. Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) was fastest.
In division two Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta) had a great tussle with Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) running to the finish line crossing a second apart to be first and second on handicap. Third was Farrouk (Des and Gail Riley) however they were fastest around the course.
Tony Brooke’s Mimosa benefitted from the new smaller jib in such conditions racing away for first and fastest in division three albeit only 19 seconds ahead of Hard Evidence (Peter Hibberd) on handicap. Tosca (Stuart Marks and Leigh Collins) was third.
An excellent fleet of twenty three yachts started in this ocean race, the third of eight in the series and due to the conditions there were three retirements. Sue Carter was on hand to present pennants as it was Sue and Alan Carter who first proposed the race in 1989 and the trophy is named after them.
