Pot of Gold and Dash for Cash Beckon
The Big Boats Race to Hillarys
Crush a TP52 skippered by David Davenport will be an entrant in the Pot of Gold offshore race starting in Fremantle next Saturday January 29th to go around Rottnest and finish at Hillarys Yacht Club.
And Crush will not be the only big yacht with Enterprise Next Generation (Anthony Kirke) and Weapon of Choice (Mark Nagle) also amongst the twenty boat fleet to make the journey. These three finished one, two, three on IRC rating results in the most recent race “3 Ports Race”. It should be a spectacular sight for those on Port Beach or the North Mole when the yachts tack upwind to the day buoy before setting spinnakers to head for Rottnest. Whilst the big yachts have crews of up to 14 onboard, spare a thought for those doing it double-handed (a recent addition of category for the Sydney to Hobart) including Melbourne to Osaka (Japan) successful competitor Todd Giraudo on Kraken.
Yachts from HYC to look out for include Lithium, Bad Habits, Surfer Rosa and Mulberry.
Yachts that are not part of the Ocean Racing WA scene will be competing in the Dash for Cash which also starts offshore from Fremantle and after heading halfway to Rottnest will round a marker and complete a coastal course between Scarborough and Hillarys.
Both races provide an opportunity to put a little back in the kitty for maintenance in this most expensive sport, or just spend it at the bar in a night of celebrations at Hillarys Yacht Club. This event is the swan song for Aquatics Manager Chris Kelly whose contribution to offshore sailing, organising regattas and training is sure to be highlighted on the evening.
