MOB Consistency Race for Keelboats

Sailors from Hillarys Yacht Club may have been apprehensive about the wind and rain expected from ex-tropical cyclone Charlotte however they had nothing to fear on Sunday morning March 27th as they prepared for the annual man overboard race.

The strong south easterly, although gusting and shifty, was ideal for the quick recovery of a bucket tied to a fender simulating the man overboard. The manoeuvre conducted once going upwind and again downwind involved tacking and gybing in close proximity to other boats doing the same thing. For those who chose to fly a spinnaker the downwind leg meant dropping the spinnaker and re-hoisting after picking up the bucket. Chaos averted, the yachts completed the last consistency race for the season in gusts reaching twenty knots.

Adam’s Rib (Rob Giraudo and Bob Mason) proved to be just as quick without the spinnaker and won in division one ahead of Perle who flew a code zero, a small asymmetric and also a symmetric spinnaker on different legs. Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) made a welcome return to racing and was third and fastest on the day.

Covert Operation (Graham Atkinson and Bart Brouwer) stamped their backmarker authority on the competition in division two with a seven minute line honours win but had to settle for second place behind Farrouk (Des and Gail Riley) albeit by just four seconds. Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) was third.

Damian and Kerry Martin on Resolute continued on their winning way in division three with fastest on the day Mimosa (Tony Brooke) second and Peter Hibberd sailing just two-up on Hard Evidence was a very creditable third.
