Mindarie Race for Keelboats April 3 2022

The light northerly zephyr was sufficient to get the annual ocean race to Mindarie from Hillarys Yacht Club on Sunday April 3rd going however after three hours of racing, if one could call it racing and only one quarter of the distance covered, race management decided the iron genoa was a better option. With that leg cancelled there was eager anticipation for the forecast to be fulfilled again and sure enough a ten knot westerly moved to the south and filled in to fifteen knots for a quick return race to Hillarys.

There were nineteen boats in the three divisions for a single GPS timed start and it was basic straight line, drag racing with results dependent on hull speed and trimming of sails which produced some very close results.

In division one Seachange (Hugh Burton, David Boyd, Cass Castalanelli, John Gregory) edged out Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) who took line honours for first place on handicap by just 43 seconds. Bad Habits (Ian Holder) was third but first on IRC.

In a small fleet, Farrouk (Des and Gail Riley) lead from start to finish in division two to repeat last year’s result of first and fastest ahead of Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) and Helga (Mark Taylor) was third.

The closest racing was in the eight boat division three fleet with second place just ten seconds behind first and third just another second further back. At five knots one second equates to about two and a half metres. Fastest was Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) and second to Hard Evidence (Peter Hibberd) with Mimosa (Tony Brooke) that agonising second adrift in third place.
