Fairway Ocean Race: Season Final
The Fairway race, the final race of the ocean series and the summer season drew eighteen yachts from Hillarys Yacht Club out of the marina despite the forecast for showers and a strong north-westerly in the afternoon of Sunday, April 10th. Most were appreciative of the opportunity to have one last thrust for some of the silverware on offer at the end of the year. Over the four hours to complete the race which took them halfway to Rottnest before turning for home the conditions gradually deteriorated with the wind building, a squall of 25 knots hit some of the fleet, one yacht retired immediately, and the hopes of some were dashed.
Revelling in the conditions was Surfer Rosa, noted offshore racer, skippered by Roric Smith recording the fastest time of 3.38.18 and on handicap was first ahead of Perle and Adam’s Rib (Rob Giraudo and Bob Mason) in division one. Both regret the error of crossing the start-line early and losing valuable time going back to re-start.
Mark Taylor will hold the Fairway trophy aloft on Presentation Night winning the race in division two from Show Me (Tim Tucker) and Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta). In an exciting finish to the race Farrouk (Des and Gail Riley) made a run for line honours bridging the gap to Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) over the last 100 metres however Blue Chip held on for a one second win.
Resolute goes from strength to strength in division three with another win as Damian and Kerry Martin gain experience in their first season with the boat. Fastest on the day and in second place was Mimosa (Tony Brooke), also in his first season with this boat and Hard Evidence (Peter Hibberd) was third.
