Final Winter Race Mastered and Mast-less
Blustery east-nor-easterly winds up to 20 knots in the final race on Sunday provided the ideal conditions to test the wanna-be Winter Series winners, and tested they were with one yacht losing their mast after a shackle holding the back stay failed. The sails were salvaged immediately but the mast lies on the sea-bed for recovery another day.
Close finishes in the race off Hillarys ultimately led to the series winners being decided by a single point in each of the three divisions.
Division one leader Mark Pitt on Mulberry looked to be a sure thing going into the race only to end up bridesmaid again as they watched Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) pip Perle on the line to win the race and the series by one point. Third in the race was Ian Walker on Sally Malay whilst Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) was third in the series.
In division two Tony Waymouth on Sheer Magic had more than a head start and took off in the strong winds never to be reeled in scoring a convincing win over Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta) and Show Me (Tim Tucker). The third placing of Show Me was enough to win the series by one point from Volant with Greg Hill on Not Negotiable third in series and fastest on the day.
A win for Chris Blackney on Vaya Con Dios in division three over Steve O’Keeffe on Comfortably Numb was enough for him to draw level with O’Keeffe on points and win the series on a countback. Despite retiring from the race Marc Carpenter on Intuition held on to third place in the series from fastest on the day, Jack Tar (Bill Gilbert).
Racing resumes at Hillarys Yacht Club on October 10th with the Commodore’s Cup on Opening Day.
