North Coast Series Under (water) Way

Twelve yachts from HYC (8) and ORSSC (4) decided to front up for the NCS on Sunday despite the constant drizzle and an apparent lack of wind. Those laying the course from the RIBs were faced with cold conditions and fluctuating wind changes. After a delay to allow the wind to show itself racing was underway. ORSSC are hoping to wrest the trophy back from HYC and were off to a good start with Bull Bar (J Leitch) first and fastest in race 1 and first in the second race of division one. Panache (Geoff and Rita James) the top boat in division two last season moved up a division and assisted their cause with a second placing. For HYC Bad Habits (Ian Holder) had a good day with a second and fifth, whilst Salamander with new owner John Swift at the helm was third and fourth. Bruce Bradford showing no less skill than daughter Chelsea steered Whispering Jack to a fastest time in race 2 finishing third. They were well supported by Sophia (Bruce Utting) and Haywire (Ian and Marie Conboy).
In division two Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was fastest in both races for a first and second placing for HYC with Volant (first and third) and Blue Chip (second and fourth) giving good support. Terry O’Grady on Quicksilver sailed a lone hand for a third and fourth for ORSSC.
The top club is the one with the lowest score and at the end of day one ORSSC is 50 and HYC 49. The next NCS day is December 6th and hopefully the weather will be back to normal summer conditions for a bigger turn-out of yachts.
