Hillarys to Fremantle and Return Ocean Races
The Fremantle Doctor, a brisk sou-westerly, came to the rescue when both of the annual yacht races from Hillarys to Fremantle and return the following day began with little wind and a postponed start.
The southerly journey on Saturday began in a light and fluky easterly and the racing yachts of division one crafted a lead and benefitted when the sea breeze arrived. Out in front it was a battle between Lithium (Wayne Pitcher) and Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) with Lithium fastest but fourth on handicap and Deckchairs Overboard first both on handicap and IRC (International Rating Certificate). Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford) was second with Perle third.
After the delayed start on Sunday the sea breeze slowly filled in over a period of an hour and it was a fast spinnaker run home. Perle was first on handicap and IRC with Seachange (Hugh Burton, Cass Castalanelli, David Boyd, John Gregory) second and Dart Vader (Scott Eiszle and Neil Ireland) third. Lithium was fastest.
In division two Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was fastest both ways for a first and second placing; Sheer Magic (Tony Waymouth) won the return race and Blue Chip placed second and third.
Larraine Brindle had a good weekend winning both races in division three on Stelfred with Sensei (Brett and Lynda Bailey), Tosca (Stuart Marks and Leigh Collins) and Salamander (John Swift) sharing the places. First Impression (Ron Marian and Allen Sharman) was fastest both ways.
