Marmion Reef Race
An accurate forecast of a twenty knot southerly for around midday on Sunday may have put some sailors off the classic ocean Marmion Reef Race however for the sixteen yachts that sailed it was some tough work to windward and thrilling kite rides.
Starting in front of Hillarys Yacht Club, the course takes yachts south to the cardinal marker off Scarborough to turn north outside the reef and head to a marker off Ocean Reef Boat Harbour before beating back almost to the south cardinal marker again and then home. Outside and close to the reef, dodging cray pots and leads the southerly provided a fast spinnaker ride north for division one and two.
After four hours of racing only 2 mins 17 secs separated first from fourth on handicap in division one. First and fastest was Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) with Bad Habits (Ian Holder) second and Perle third.
In division two Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was first and fastest with Farrouk (Lee Burrows and Rod Hernaman) and Blue Chip (Keith and Deboarah Fisk) filling the minor places.
With just the jib and mainsail to manage in division three, Chris Blackney put paid to the notion it was a tough race, sailing solo for first place with Intuition (Marc Carpenter) second and Stelfred (Larraine Brindle) third. First Impression (Ron Marian and Allen Sharman) was fastest.
With everyone back safe and sound, Sue Carter was on hand to present the Carter Family Trophy pennants to the winners.
