Australia Day Cup

Although a little light to begin with the sea breeze slowly filled in and provided ideal sailing conditions for the Australia Day Cup on Tuesday 26th January at Hillarys Yacht Club. Members already had a spring in their step having just learnt at the race briefing that tireless volunteer Rob Sweet had been honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Awards. Rob generously spends countless hours volunteering at both HYC and working with returned veterans. He received his well-deserved medal for services to veterans and their families.
Proving popular though problematic for yachts with deep keels, the course chosen took boats close to Pinnaroo Point on the way to Mullaloo before heading in the traditional direction of south.
Searching for deeper waters Bruce Bradford took Whispering Jack on a circuitous route and still managed to be fastest in division one although third on handicap behind Sophia (Bruce Utting) and Perle.
In division two Tim Tucker on Show Me had a convincing win over Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) who was fastest and Volant (Emille Janssen, Frank Hagemann, John Ball, Kevin Meta).
New owners John Swift on Salamander (first and fastest) and Peter Hibberd on Hard Evidence (second) celebrated Australia Day with their performances in division three with Vaya Con Dios (Chris Blackney) third.
