Rottnest and Return Ocean Races
Lithium metal is pretty explosive when placed in water and Lithium the yacht reacted similarly in the Rottnest to Hillarys Yacht Club return leg of the weekend ocean races. Wayne Pitcher, owner/skipper of Lithium was first on IRC, on handicap and fastest in Sunday’s race making amends for Saturday’s race to Rottnest where he was fifth. Deckchairs Overboard (Neil and Wendy Harrison) performed well both days with two-second places and a first on IRC. The winner on Saturday in division one was Lamotrek (John Akers) with Perle and Surfer Rosa (Roric Smith) each scoring a third placing over the two days.
In division two after three hours of racing to Rottnest on Saturday only 24 seconds separated the first three placegetters. It was Covert Operation (Graham Atkinson and Bart Brouwer) first and fastest followed by Sheer Magic (Tony Waymouth) and Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk). Blue Chip was first on the return journey, Covert Operation, second and fastest and Show Me (Tim Tucker) was third.
Ten yachts competed in division three which is using only the jib and mainsail and is proving popular for those who acquired yachts recently or perhaps are just learning to sail and those with cruising yachts.
Going over to Rottnest it was Tosca (Stuart Marks and Leigh Collins) first followed by Stelfred (Larraine Brindle) and Jack Tar (Bill Gilbert). In the return race very experienced Ron Marian was first and fastest with First Impression, the second was Tony Brooke on Mimosa, his recently acquired very impressive 42 foot cruising yacht and third was Chris Blackney on Vaya Con Dios.
