North Coast Series Final Showdown
Light winds was just the forecast Ocean Reef wanted to propel their lighter racers on the final day of racing between Hillarys Yacht Club and Ocean Reef in the North Coast Series held off Mullaloo on March 21. Trying to bridge the deficit of 12 points Ocean Reef blitzed the results in division one with Hot Gossip (Ian Campbell), Bull Bar (Jeremy Leitch) and Taurus (Ian James) filling the first three places. In race two the results were similar, Hot Gossip, Bull Bar with Leda (Frank Centa) third and Taurus in fourth place. For Hillarys Sophia (Bruce Utting) and Perle were well back in fifth and sixth place. The trophy looked like it was heading to Ocean Reef.
The light north-easterly filled in a tad and shifted to the west and the ambitious race committee committed the sailors to an extra lap for the second race.
The division two results went the other way with Hillarys’ boats filling the first five places except for Louisa (Ken and Helen Wood) from Ocean Reef with a second and fifth. For Hillarys it was Catabatic (Rob Bills) and Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) with a win each and third placings to Blue Chip (Keith and Deborah Fisk) and Show Me (Tim Tucker) that rebuffed the challenge from Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club.
The final result was a series win to Hillarys Yacht Club 454 to 471.
