Mindarie and Return Ocean Races

On Sunday April 11, with the threat of the approaching cyclone Seroja and with four trophies to be decided after the final two ocean races of the season, strong winds and driving rain didn’t deter the crews of seventeen yachts from competing in the Hillarys to Mindarie and return ocean races.
The easterly gusted to twenty knots and drove the yachts northwards at record pace completing the journey in an hour and a half.
Fastest in both directions in division one was Wayne Pitcher’s Lithium settling for third on the way there and first on the return, whilst Perle was first going there and third coming back. Bad Habits (Ian Holder) tested their new rig without mishap to be second in both races. Lithium and Perle shared the IRC honours for first place.
In division two Helga (Mark Taylor) revelled in the conditions for first on the way up and second on the way back. Farrouk in the hands of new owners Des and Gail Riley, quickly adapted to the new boat and finished third going to Mindarie and were first and fastest on the return. Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta) was second going up to Mindarie whilst the other placegetter was Show Me (Tim Tucker) with a third place on the return. Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was fastest going to Mindarie.
In division three Comfortably Numb (Steve OKeeffe) was first both ways, Salamander (John Swift) was third both ways with Tosca (Stuart Marks and Leigh Collins) second going up and Stelfred (Larraine Brindle) second coming back.
Comfortably Numb and Salamander shared the honours for fastest time.
