The much anticipated, postponed final race of the Hillarys Yacht Club keelboat winter series was finally sailed on Sunday. With a handicap start the fresh south-easterly sent the early boats away with spinnakers flying to establish a lead that was unassailable for the back-markers in a dying breeze.
In division one John Akers on Lamotrek sailed on a lift into first place snatching victory in the last fifty metres from Mulberry (Mark Pitt) and Perle (John Bird). Incredibly the fastest time around the course was shared by Lamotrek and back-marker Lithium (Wayne Pitcher). Fourth was enough for Lithium to claim the series win after three emphatic first and fastest results from Mulberry and Whispering Jack (Chelsea Bradford).
Fastest in division two was Mark Taylor on Helga but had to settle for second as Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball, Frank Hagemann, Kevin Meta) won, clinching the series win from Helga. The all-ladies crew of Xtreme skippered by Magdalena Urban was third in the race and series.
Marc and Jan Carpenter on Intuition won the division three race however three first and fastest results secured the series win for Louise Harvey on Rushmere from Intuition and Show Me (Tim and Katie Tucker).
Crews now enjoy a short break until the Opening Day and Commodore’s Cup on October 6th.
