Could have been catastrophic
On Sunday November 24 the third ocean race of a series of eight for the season was held for the keelboats of Hillarys Yacht Club.
A strong sea breeze of more than twenty knots suited the spinnaker driven catamaran of Ian Walker, Sally Malay, as she raced from Scarborough to Ocean Reef outside the full length of the treacherous Marmion Reef. Surfing down 2 metre waves, yachts achieved more than expected hull speeds and plenty of thrills. After tacking back up to Scarborough and then finishing in front of the clubhouse, Sally Malay’s fastest time also put her twenty minutes on handicap in front of Perle with Dart Vader (S Eiszle and N Ireland) third in division one. Lithium (W Pitcher) was fastest on IRC.
In division two Lee Burrows and Lee Hernaman on Farrouk mastered the difficult conditions best to record a first and fastest ahead of Volant (E Janssen, J Ball, F Hagemann, K Meta) and Helga (M Taylor).
Brett and Lynda Bailey on Sensei was first and fastest in division three, albeit only 21 seconds ahead of Show Me (T and K Tucker) after four hours of racing with Jack Tar third (B Gilbert).
