Marine Radio Courses

Hillarys-Yacht-Club VHF-Course

Marine radios are an essential and important piece of safety equipment on board your vessel, providing a way to communicate with other boats or marine rescue groups, and receive navigational warnings and weather updates. You must be qualified to operate a marine radio.

The Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) and Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) courses offered by Hillarys Yacht Club teach you how to confidently and competently operate and use correct radio protocols, procedures, radio rules and etiquette when using a marine radio and to familiarise you with all situations that you may encounter and require to use a marine radio.

The course content includes making calls, receiving calls, relaying calls, and various call signs and distress messages.

Skippers and crew should know –

  • How to operate all marine radios on board your boat
  • The distress and safety frequencies
  •  How to properly format and transmit distress and safety messages.

Short Range & Long Range Radio Licenses

The Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) is designed for those who are only carrying and/or operating a Very High Frequency (VHF) short-range radio.

The Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) is for operating both short-range (VHF) radios and High Frequency (HF) long-range radios for long-range transmission.

The minimum age for the SROCP and LROCP qualifications is 16 years.

The SROCP and LROCP exams and certificates for the courses provided at Hillarys Yacht Club are issued and managed by the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania.

Handbooks and revision questions for both courses can be viewed online HERE. A hard copy of the relevant handbook will be provided at the course.
