Trophy Officer Retires

After 20 years of service dedicated to meticulously managing the keelboat racing collection of trophies at HYC, Clem Rogers stepped down from the role following the annual Keel Presentation Dinner.

A role, some would say was a thankless task, Clem took pride in maintaining accurate records of every trophy with a file documenting details of donors and winners and photos of each trophy. Each year, in a pressure-cooked time frame, Clem would gather results following the last points-race to prepare the information for the engraver, collect updated trophies and assemble for presentation on the day of the dinner.

New trophies such as the Chris Grant Memorial Race trophy, the Summer Consistency trophy and division three trophies were added. Clem guided modifications to trophies to cope with new plates needed as the years rolled by, creating a formidable history of keelboat racing success as the young Club grew in stature. The collection is now the legacy of 20 years of dedication by Clem and the HYC sailing fraternity, and indeed all at the Club, thank Clem for a job well done.

Clem was a regular at HYC, sailing on Des and Gail Riley and Marshall and Ann Fox's Hard Evidence, and as Harbour Master of the RPYC's Annex at Fremantle was a great friend of HYC, facilitating berthing after the ocean race to Freo. On a more adventurous occasion, Clem sailed in the Fremantle to Albany and return ocean races with Tony Brooke and John Bird in 2015 on Sand Crabs Disco.

No doubt with a little more time on his hands after relinquishing the role and handing over to Gail Riley, Clem will continue with one of his favourite pasttimes: travel. Maybe another America’s Cup, Clem?
