Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST)

Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST)

Every skipper of a recreational vessel powered by a motor greater than 4.5kwp (6hp) is required to hold a Recreational Skipper’s Ticket.

The RST is a qualification based on a set of national marine safety competencies that a skipper must demonstrate. The RST will ensure that the people in charge of recreational vessels have the minimum skills and knowledge to protect themselves, their passengers, and to share the waterways safely with others.

This RST course has a classroom theory component and a practical on-water skills component. Students will learn the basic powerboat handling skills, compulsory safety equipment, weather forecasting, collision regulations, vessel knowledge and basic navigation. The course incorporates the theory and practical assessments for the Department of Transport Recreational Skippers Ticket.

Anyone from the age of 14 years and up can hold an RST, however, those under the age of 17 will be restricted to a speed of 8 knots and may only skipper a vessel in daylight hours. On their 17th birthday, this becomes an Open RST ticket with no age restrictions; there is no need to requalify.

Course cost: $251 Members $281 Non-Members
